2024 Cove Park Fellowship Recipient from Scotland
Following on from our announcement of Brooke Robinson as Varuna’s 2024 Cove Park fellowship recipient, we are delighted to share that former Cove Park resident Sean Wai Keung will visit Varuna in 2025, as part of our ongoing international exchange program, supported by The Bridge Awards.
Sean will be travelling from Scotland in October 2025 and will feature in the Blue Mountains Writers’ Festival program. During his stay, he plans to continue his work exploring inter-generational and inter-cultural grief, especially as it relates to diasporic communities, seeing how this translates within an Australian context.
Sean Wai Keung is a writer and performance maker based in Glasgow. His pamphlet ‘you are mistaken’ won the Rialto Open Pamphlet Competition 2016 and his debut full length poetry collection, ‘sikfan glaschu’, was published by Verve Poetry Press in April 2021. It went on to be shortlisted for the 2022 Kavya Prize and was also described as “joyful, earnest and offering unexpected poignancies from everyday life” by The Scotsman. He has worked with organisations including the National Theatre of Scotland, Tramway Glasgow and the Scottish BPOC Writers Network, amongst others. His work often uses food as a starting point for explorations around community, identity and migration, and he often draws on his own background as a mixed race creative, especially drawing on the experiences of his maternal grandparents who were migrants from rural Hong Kong.
We can’t wait to welcome Sean next year, and we look forward to hearing more about his work at the Festival!
