WestWords-Varuna Emerging Writers’ Residency


WestWords and Varuna have partnered for the WestWords Varuna Western Sydney Residential Program offering five emerging writers from diverse backgrounds from Western Sydney the opportunity of a six-day residency at Varuna.

Residency dates: Between 16-23 September 2024
Places: Five writers will be selected for a six-day residency at Varuna
Who should apply: Emerging writers from Western Sydney who are working on a current creative writing project (includes fiction, drama, poetry, and narrative non-fiction) where a significant amount of work has already been completed.
Fees: There are no application fees or residency fees for this program.


Westwords is offering five emerging writers from Western Sydney the opportunity to take part in a six-day residential program to continue developing their current project. The recipients will be joined by a live-in mentor who will be chosen in response to the successful candidates so that the mentorship offered is tailored to the people and their work.

The residency is limited to only five participants and will include:

  • A mix of mentorship, private writing time as well as social time for unstructured conversation

  • One-on-one mentorship/consultation

  • Six nights’ accommodation at Varuna including meals, between 16 - 23 September 2024


HOW TO APPLY

The residency is intended for the development of a current project where a significant amount of work has been completed.

The residencies will be awarded to emerging writers from Western Sydney who display exceptional promise in their writing style and the premise of the work. WestWords welcomes manuscripts from writers working in all creative forms, including fiction, drama, poetry, and narrative non-fiction.
