Jill Kitson, who died last month, was a former director of Varuna's board. She cared deeply about literature and helped Varuna develop relevant programs and activities to support writing and reading.
A skilled interviewer, she led thoughtful discussions with writers at the annual Varuna-Sydney Writers' Festival. She conducted a memorable interview with AA Gill, a writer once described as 'often controversial, occasionally offensive'. Jill must have charmed the author, who gave thoughtful responses to her questions and then agreed to read from his latest book. He told her he had never before read aloud in public, due to severe dyslexia.
The attached obituary was written by former Board chair, Gillian Appleton.
