The Art of the Sentence with Michelle de Kretser

Sentence after sentence after sentence ... is how a book is built.

In this half-day workshop, we'll discuss examples of good sentences and those that require more work. We'll consider rhythm and syntax, and look at sentences that work hard. Writing exercises will help you come up with stronger, livelier sentences.

Participants are asked to email a sample of their prose, not exceeding 500 words, a week in advance. Michelle will provide written feedback on the sample and you will workshop it in small groups as well, all with a focus on sentences.

This workshop will be best suited to emerging writers who want to take their prose to the next level.

A light afternoon tea will be provided. Maximum of 12 workshop participants. Participants must be 18+.

Michelle de Kretser was born in Sri Lanka and lives in Sydney. She is the author of five novels, the most recent of which is The Life to Come. Her previous novel, Questions of Travel, won the Miles Franklin Award. Michelle's fiction is published across the world and has won numerous awards.
