Article on Leni Shilton's "Giving Voice to Silence" verse novel about Bertha Strehlow

“The university I'm associated with, Southern Cross University, have published an article on the grant and the Varuna Fellowship I received to help get Bertha's story published!”

New life has been breathed into the forgotten story of Bertha Strehlow, the wife of Central Australian anthropologist and linguist Ted Strehlow, in a verse novel by a Southern Cross University PhD researcher.

The significance of this historical figure’s revival, focused on the time when Bertha lived in Central Australia between the first and second world wars, has seen poet Leni Shilton awarded two writing opportunities to fast track the publication of ‘Giving Voice to Silence’: a $15,000 Arts NT development grant and a two-week Varuna Residential Fellowship writing retreat in the Blue Mountains.
