Some four years ago I came to Varuna for a wonderful residential course with Peter Bishop. He liked the manuscript which I brought along, entitled The Blood Forest. But there were some serious problems. I attended to them and submitted my story to three major publishers. They all said nice things about it - but no contract! They claimed that they didn't have the budget to promote an unknown writer - not withstanding that I had hundreds of credits in television and theatre (including an AWGIE for my play The Defeat). Getting to be "known" in the writing world would appear to be quite a problem. Thankfully, the Melbourne publishers, Sid Harta, decided to take a risk and my novel has just been published.
