Varuna Announces Two New Opportunities for Essay Writers
Varuna is proud to partner Griffith Review in two new programs aimed at presenting, exploring and extending the range of essay writing in Australia.
The programs are open to writers resident in Australia. Writers are invited to apply to one or both programs:
- The Varuna/Griffith Review National Essay Competition
- The Varuna/Griffith Review Masterclass: Exploring the Essay, with Peter Bishop and Robin Hemley
The Varuna/Griffith Review National Essay Competition
Writers are invited to submit essays for possible inclusion in a special issue of Griffith Review. The issue will showcase the rich diversity of narrative nonfiction being produced by today’s Australian writers. Robin Hemley, director of the nonfiction writing program at the University of Iowa, will be co-editing the issue with Griffith Review editor Julianne Schultz.
The Varuna/Griffith Review Masterclass: Exploring the Essay is an intensive six-day residential program to help writers extend their knowledge of the essay form. Activities include discussions, readings and practical work, with participants editing one of their essays and starting a new one. Peter Bishop and Robin Hemley will lead the masterclass. Peter, Varuna’s Creative Director, has been working with writers for over 16 years. Robin directs the nonfiction writing program at the University of Iowa. His stories and essays have appeared in many anthologies and literary journals.
